#311 Lemon and Jar

Click to buy! (8x8 inch oil)

I know it has been a long time since I've written a blog post.  I actually painted this in March, but I'm just now posting it!  I painted it high key.  I like how clean and bright it looks.

I haven't been posting much lately because I'm going back to work full time.  Even though I'm not full time yet, it has been taking a lot of energy to make that transition.  I hope to still paint while working more, though I know I won't be able to paint as frequently for the time being.

#307 What a Pair

Click to buy! (8x8 inch oil)

This was my second attempt at painting avocados over the weekend.  I've been wanting to paint avocados on yellow for a while and I'm glad I found a composition that worked.  I added the white because all the yellow seemed like too much for me.  I like how the hole on the left worked out and I like the pop of blue shadow, too.  I did work fast because the avocados were browning quickly!

#305 Yellow Flowers and Lemons

Click to buy! (10x8 in.)

I painted this piece in February.  I was in a yellow groove and experimenting with high key.  The flowers were from a bouquet from my husband on Valentines Day.

#304 Dishes and Lemons

Click to buy! (8x8 inch oil)

It's been so long since I posted.  I've had a lot going on.  Plus the weather has been so gray and rainy, which is not motivating at all!  This was painted a few weeks ago.  I liked trying to capture the warm light.

#299 The Yellow Cup

Click to buy! (8x8 inch oil)

Painted for this week's DPW Challenge, "The Cups Challenge".  I like the saturated colors of the cup and the orange.  I always like turquoise glass :)

#297 Pink Lemonade

Click to buy! (10x8 inch oil)

This painting was my third attempt at painting these lemons.  I already posted the first one "Lemons for Tea" and the second one didn't turn out.  Still not sure what went wrong with that one.  Oh well!  I picked up this bowl at Target last fall and I'm finally getting around to painting it.  I think the spot on the lemon that is bright pink is pretty cool and was fun to paint.  Lemons are tricky to paint, but I'm pretty happy with how this one turned out.

I included some detail shots below.  I also included a quick experiment I did on gessobord.

#295 Lemons for Tea

Click to buy! (8x8 inch oil)

I had to rework the lemons a couple of times before I liked them.  I borrowed this tea pot from a friend and I think this is the third time I've used it in a painting.  I'm always intimidated by ceramic items, but I think I'm starting to get a better hang of painting reflections in it.  I've found doing a value study first really helps me keep the reflections more accurate and I try to just use loose brush strokes.  Painted this for the DPW Challenge to use an even number of items in a composition.  Hence the 4 lemons.

#293 All in the Family

Click to buy! (8x8 inch oil)

These bottles were all sitting on a shelf together in my studio.  They caught my eye and a painting was born!

#286 Oranges on Pink

Click to buy! (8x10 inch oil)

I can't believe I still haven't posted the three paintings I did at the Sarah Sedwick workshop I took in October.  I learned so much while I was there.  It also helped me experiment more with painting on canvas and I've been enjoying that a lot.  She is a fantastic teacher.  I'm so thankful that she teaches in OKC somewhat regularly (will be back in 2018)!  I highly recommend taking a workshop from her if you have the chance.

Here is a picture of it framed with a frame built by my husband.  Isn't he talented?

#280 Brightly Shining

Click to buy! (8x10 inch oil)

For this painting, I didn't use a light.  I only used the candlelight and the ambient lighting in the room.  It was a fun challenge.  Especially capturing the candle as it burned down!

#275 Persimmons and Green

Click to buy! (8x8 inch oil)

I bought these persimmons at Sprouts over the weekend.  I think I was a little overly ambitious with the composition...especially since I started and finished the painting late at night!  It was tricky getting the values dark enough on the bowl and on the persimmons.  Took a few attempts.

#262 Sunflowers in Orange Bottle

Click to buy! (6x6 inch oil)

I've been painting a lot of sunflowers the last couple of months.  I just like them so much.  Painting the orange bottle was challenging...especially the lightest bits of orange.  I like the pop of orange and pink in the shadow.

#253 Warm Plums

Click to buy! (6x6 inch oil)

This is the last painting I did of the plums.  I decided to use a mustard yellow because I thought it would look nice with the rich colors of the fruit.  I also attempted the white plate again.  I had to redo it several times, darkening the values.

#249 Colorful Assembly

Click to buy! (12x16 inch oil)

I really enjoyed painting this one.  It's painted on stretched canvas, which isn't typical for me.  My brush strokes don't show up as much on the canvas.  Maybe I need to use thicker paint in areas.  But I still really like how it turned out!  The photo is a little washed out, especially near the top.

#248 Sunflower and Glass

Click to buy! (10x8 inch oil)

I keep adding glass to my paintings lately.  I'm trying to get better at it because it's fun and I like what it adds to a painting.  I've never painted this orange bottle, though I've had it for a long time.  I also added a sunflower from Sprouts!  I really like the shadows made by colored glass.

#247 The Aviator's Wife Book Club

SOLD (12x12 inch oil)

This month we read "The Aviator's Wife" by Melanie Benjamin about Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh.  Fascinating story.  Didn't know much about them beforehand and definitely made me want to learn more!  Found these flowers alongside the road.

#243 Afternoon Lemons

Click to buy! (7x5 inch oil)

I painted these lemons on a little table in front of a window in my studio.  I don't think I've ever painted anything in this kind of light.  It gave the lemons a really different look than when they are in my shadowbox.  I want to experiment with it a lot more.

#242 Blue Vase, Flowers and Peaches"

Click to bid! (10x8 inch oil)

Tried to keep the flowers somewhat loose by mostly just blocking in the lights and darks.  Also wanted to add some peaches because they will only be around for a little while longer!  This is the blue vase I purchased from At Home a couple of months ago.

A couple of process shots below...

#241 French Light

Click to buy! (6x6 inch oil)

Painted for this week's Daily Paintworks Challenge, The Light/Shadow Challenge.  The photo reference was taken by Carol Marine in France.  I was pretty intimidated to try this painting, but I'm pleased with how it turned out!

#240 Lemons and Bottle on Blue

Click to buy! (6x6 inch oil)

I set up this still life last night after my daughter went to bed.  My intention was to paint something simple...like a lemon...because it was late and I was tired.  But once I started working on the composition I ended up with this!  It was fun.  I love lemons.  They are so pretty and challenging.  It's hard to get the subtle variations in color and value.  I'm pretty happy with how they turned out in this painting...though I wish I had played around with the edges a little more.  I'm also always challenged by painting this blue background.  It's hard for me to keep the color rich but show the difference between the light value and the dark value in shadow.  More glass...of course!
