#292 Freshly Squeezed

Click to buy! (10x10 inch oil)

It was my husband's idea to paint a glass of orange juice.  I had a totally different composition in my mind initially that was going to have a white background, but it wasn't working out too well.  So I changed it up and went darker.  I still hope to do another orange juice painting in a higher key soon.  I tried the reflective surface again, too.  The background is a little more blue than this photo shows.  You can tell that better in the second picture.

#246 Purple Vase and Orange

Click to buy! (6x6 inch oil)

Painted this today while my little was at pre-k!  It was her 3rd day and each day seems to be getting better for her.  Change is hard, right?  It was so nice to paint during the day instead of late at night and also not feel rushed.  I actually set this still life up on Friday, but I didn't have time to paint on Saturday and wasn't feeling too well on Sunday.  Thankfully the flowers were only wilting a little.  I painted the vase at one of those paint your own ceramic places.  I still want to go back and paint more pieces for my still lives.

#244 Jif

SOLD (7x5 inch oil)

Painted this week for the Daily Paintworks Challenge, The Name Brand Challenge.  I've tried something different the last couple of days.  I've started out my painting with a 15 minute sketch on oil paper.  It's been helpful.  I know they aren't a final product so I've felt more free to just go for it and it has also helped me solve problems before I get to the real painting.  I'm including a photo of the sketches below.

#243 Afternoon Lemons

Click to buy! (7x5 inch oil)

I painted these lemons on a little table in front of a window in my studio.  I don't think I've ever painted anything in this kind of light.  It gave the lemons a really different look than when they are in my shadowbox.  I want to experiment with it a lot more.

#240 Lemons and Bottle on Blue

Click to buy! (6x6 inch oil)

I set up this still life last night after my daughter went to bed.  My intention was to paint something simple...like a lemon...because it was late and I was tired.  But once I started working on the composition I ended up with this!  It was fun.  I love lemons.  They are so pretty and challenging.  It's hard to get the subtle variations in color and value.  I'm pretty happy with how they turned out in this painting...though I wish I had played around with the edges a little more.  I'm also always challenged by painting this blue background.  It's hard for me to keep the color rich but show the difference between the light value and the dark value in shadow.  More glass...of course!

#238 Summer Melon

Click to buy! (6x6 inch oil)

I was super tired the other night.  It had been a long day with a melting down 5 year old.  I still wanted to paint, but needed to keep it simple.  I accidentally bought a seeded watermelon at Sprouts and I'm so glad I did!  I like to eat seedless, but prefer painting with seeds.  I painted it on a new linen panel I ordered through Jerry's Artarama.  It is a brown color before painted.  That threw me off a little at first, but it worked out fine.  I actually bought quite a few linen panels to experiment with them more.  I like the texture it gives the painting.  At the same time, I love the buttery smoothness of the gessobord.  It's nice to have options :)

#236 Pear in a Pink Bowl

Click to buy! (5x7 inch oil)

I have these posts a little out of order because I painted this pear last week when I was in a pear streak.  I like painting this bowl.  It's challenging to get the drawing and values correct, but I like the color and especially the color in the shadow.

#234 The Green Pair

Click to buy! (6x6 inches)

Painted the two pears again.  I couldn't get the color in the photo to quite match the painting.  Not sure why that is harder with some paintings than others.  I used a new light bulb for this one.  It is a spotlight and focused the light a lot more than the other bulb I've been using.  I don't think I did the best job capturing it but I tired to make the area in the bottom right corner show the light that was pointed there.  I like painting an object on two different colored papers and seeing how the color of the shadow changes.

#233 Pears and a Glass Bowl

Click to buy! (6x6 inch oil)

The second in a series with pears!  I'm really happy with how the bowl turned out.  I had to simplify some of the shadows and reflections and this time it worked!  I like the green highlight on the rim.  I also like the purple stroke under the left pear.  It's the little things, I guess :)

#232 Pear on Pink

Click to buy! (6x6 inch oil)

When I'm needing to refocus, it often helps me to do a quick painting of a piece of fruit.  Just keep it simple.  This time I chose a pear...which I've only painted one other time for a 10 minute painting exercise.  I love back light and I can't seem to get away from pink this year. :)

#231 Lemons and Blue

Click to buy! (8x8 in.)

I painted this piece last Friday.  The glass was another dollar store purchase...blue/green, of course!  I love how the shadow of the glass is colorful and light.  I really enjoyed painting on the linen panel, again.  I have one more and I'm hoping to do a third painting with lemons on it.  My plan was to do it tonight, but I was too tired from the weekend and a full day of work and errands today!

#230 Lemons and Linen

Click to buy! (8x8 in.)

I had a lot of fun experimenting with a linen panel for the first time.  It was really different from using gessobord.  I've already painted another on linen and plan to paint one more in the same way.  Maybe it will be a little series when I'm finished :)  Was out of town with my family over the weekend but hoping to paint again on Monday evening!

#228 Get Loose

Click to buy! (6x6 in.)

Painted for the Daily Paintworks Challenge. It was really fun experimenting. I definitely see a different between the first apple and the last, but it was hard to make it get a little bit looser each time. I definitely want to try this again!

#226 July Book Club

Click to buy!  (6x6 inches)

We read "Orphan Train" for this month's book club.  It is historical fiction and I really enjoyed it.  I experimented with a pattern in the background of this one.

#225 The Blue One

Click to buy! (5x7 inches)

I painted this last week and I'm just now posting it here.  I purchased the mug at the dollar store when I was buying supplies for my daughter's birthday party.  I'm always drawn to things that are blue and green.  I struggled with the mug but in the end it turned out ok.

#224 Pinky and Wild

Click to buy! (6x6 inches)

I tried to kind of go back to the basics last night.  I think part of why I've been struggling this last week is because I'm trying to be further along in my painting journey than I really am.  I watched some Carol Marine Artbytes last night and I was reminded of why daily painting is so good for growth as an artist.  For now, I need to stick with painting daily (or close to that) and not worry so much about producing a masterpiece.  That last part is hard for me.  I need to give myself time to grow and not be so hard on myself!  I painted a pink lady apple from Sprouts and a little green apple my husband picked off a tree this week.

#223 Breakfast

Click to buy!  (8x10 inches)

Painting has been such a struggle ever since I returned from my trip to Texas.  I've had the desire but I haven't liked much that I've tried painting.  I painted this piece for this week's DPW challenge to paint breakfast foods.  I tried two other compositions and wiped both.  I'm still not sure what I think of this one.  I'm in a weird place with my painting these days.  When I first started painting, if the object I painted was recognizable it was a success!  Ha!  I also used mainly one technique...the one I found the most help with on line.  Now I'm experimenting with different techniques, trying to figure out what compositions I like, etc.  I think it will be good in the long run, but it is messy along the way!

#222 Circles and Colors

Click to buy! (10x10 in.)

I was drawn to the colors in this set up and all of the circles.  Composition is really hard for me.  Is it for you?  When I first started painting, I sort of took it for granted.  Over time I've realized how important it is.  I still have a lot to learn about it.

#221 Pink and Green Berries

Donated (6x6 in.)

I didn't paint for almost a week because I was out of town visiting family in Texas!  On Tuesday I attempted painting a purple/pink rose for the DPW Challenge, but it wasn't quite right.  So I wiped it off on Wednesday afternoon.  Last night, I tried to do something more simple and it was good for getting back into the swing of things.  Still trying to decide what I'm going to paint tonight.  I have a couple of apples and an orange.  Or I might try the rose again!

#220 Fuzzy Friends 2

Click to buy! (6x6 inch on oil)

Painted these peaches last week, but I'm just now posting!  I was in Texas for the last several days visiting family and celebrating my daughter's 5 year birthday.   I really enjoyed painting peaches.  I'm pleased with how the background turned out.   A lot of times I like the painting until I do the background.  I keep thinking that should be the easiest part but it often trips me up.
