#310 All About Pink

Click to buy! (8x8 inch oil)

This painting was inspired by a DPW Challenge.  Here is the description of the challenge:

Paint subject matter that is limited to a single color, with the exception of one small thing. The challenge is to keep the painting interesting by using a range of hues in that color, and strong value contrast. For example, in my painting I used Cadmium Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow and Cadmium Orange, and created more yellows by mixing in small amounts of red, blue, etc.

I chose pink and nail polish.  It was my first time back at the easel in awhile.  I felt kind of rusty but like how it turned out in the end.

#306 Grapes and Glass

Click to buy! (8x8 inch oil)

This was another high key experiment.  The grapes were actually much darker and duller than the light pink/red in the painting.  It was fun playing around with the color.

#300 Tenderheart

Click to buy! (8x8 inch oil)

I had a lot of fun painting this piece.  I love the golds.  I also enjoyed applying the paint using a filbert.  I've been using them on my quick value sketches, but not usually for a finished painting.  I like the strokes I get with it (can't see it well in the photo).  I hope to experiment with it more.  I also painted a high key composition and an 18x24" composition.  I'll post those soon.

#297 Pink Lemonade

Click to buy! (10x8 inch oil)

This painting was my third attempt at painting these lemons.  I already posted the first one "Lemons for Tea" and the second one didn't turn out.  Still not sure what went wrong with that one.  Oh well!  I picked up this bowl at Target last fall and I'm finally getting around to painting it.  I think the spot on the lemon that is bright pink is pretty cool and was fun to paint.  Lemons are tricky to paint, but I'm pretty happy with how this one turned out.

I included some detail shots below.  I also included a quick experiment I did on gessobord.

#286 Oranges on Pink

Click to buy! (8x10 inch oil)

I can't believe I still haven't posted the three paintings I did at the Sarah Sedwick workshop I took in October.  I learned so much while I was there.  It also helped me experiment more with painting on canvas and I've been enjoying that a lot.  She is a fantastic teacher.  I'm so thankful that she teaches in OKC somewhat regularly (will be back in 2018)!  I highly recommend taking a workshop from her if you have the chance.

Here is a picture of it framed with a frame built by my husband.  Isn't he talented?

#284 The Colorful Challenge

Click to buy!  (10x8 inch oil)

I've been wanting to paint cantaloupe for awhile and this challenge on Daily Paintworks seemed like a great opportunity!  I always enjoy painting cranberries and cherries.  I also enjoyed painting the pink glass bottle.  It was my first time to paint it.  The transparency of the pink was little challenging.  Wish it was looser and not completely sure about the composition.

#258 Morning Flowers 2

Click to buy! (10x10 inch oil)

I run by these flowers on most mornings and they are so pretty!  I think they are a type of hibiscus.  They catch my eye every time.  It was hard to get all the subtle shades of purple and pink and the texture of the petals.  The darks in the actual painting are a little darker than they show in the photo.

#257 Oranges on Pink and White

Click to buy! (5x7 inch oil)

Once again I am way behind on posting!  I painted this almost 2 weeks ago when I didn't have much time and wanted to keep it simple.  These are little oranges are small and kind of flat on top, but can't remember the name of them.

#236 Pear in a Pink Bowl

Click to buy! (5x7 inch oil)

I have these posts a little out of order because I painted this pear last week when I was in a pear streak.  I like painting this bowl.  It's challenging to get the drawing and values correct, but I like the color and especially the color in the shadow.

#232 Pear on Pink

Click to buy! (6x6 inch oil)

When I'm needing to refocus, it often helps me to do a quick painting of a piece of fruit.  Just keep it simple.  This time I chose a pear...which I've only painted one other time for a 10 minute painting exercise.  I love back light and I can't seem to get away from pink this year. :)

#230 Lemons and Linen

Click to buy! (8x8 in.)

I had a lot of fun experimenting with a linen panel for the first time.  It was really different from using gessobord.  I've already painted another on linen and plan to paint one more in the same way.  Maybe it will be a little series when I'm finished :)  Was out of town with my family over the weekend but hoping to paint again on Monday evening!

#229 Morning Flowers

 Click to buy! (7x5 inches)

I almost never paint in the mornings, but on Sunday my daughter was occupied and I had a little time before church so I decided to get started on this one.  It was nice to paint while I was still kind of fresh in the day!  Ha!  The flowers were tricky.  I started with them and wiped them 3 times before getting it like they are now.

#226 July Book Club

Click to buy!  (6x6 inches)

We read "Orphan Train" for this month's book club.  It is historical fiction and I really enjoyed it.  I experimented with a pattern in the background of this one.

#223 Breakfast

Click to buy!  (8x10 inches)

Painting has been such a struggle ever since I returned from my trip to Texas.  I've had the desire but I haven't liked much that I've tried painting.  I painted this piece for this week's DPW challenge to paint breakfast foods.  I tried two other compositions and wiped both.  I'm still not sure what I think of this one.  I'm in a weird place with my painting these days.  When I first started painting, if the object I painted was recognizable it was a success!  Ha!  I also used mainly one technique...the one I found the most help with on line.  Now I'm experimenting with different techniques, trying to figure out what compositions I like, etc.  I think it will be good in the long run, but it is messy along the way!

#221 Pink and Green Berries

Donated (6x6 in.)

I didn't paint for almost a week because I was out of town visiting family in Texas!  On Tuesday I attempted painting a purple/pink rose for the DPW Challenge, but it wasn't quite right.  So I wiped it off on Wednesday afternoon.  Last night, I tried to do something more simple and it was good for getting back into the swing of things.  Still trying to decide what I'm going to paint tonight.  I have a couple of apples and an orange.  Or I might try the rose again!

#212 Pink and Orange

SOLD (6x6 inch oil)

I named this painting "Pink and Orange" because those were my inspirations.  The bowl is actually my 4 year old's and has a picture of Cinderella on it, but I left that part out!  Ha!  I never thought I would enjoy painting the color pink as much as I do.  Maybe it is the time of year?  It was good to work on just a basic 6x6 still life after trying some new things recently.

#208 Fun Flower Challenge

SOLD (6x6 in.)

I painted this flower last Sunday for the Daily Paintworks Challenge,  but didn't get a chance to post it until now.  I had a great week in Alabama at a Gina Brown Workshop.  If you have never seen her art you should check it out!  I will write a whole post about it soon. Right now I'm trying to get this written quickly before putting my 4 year old to bed :)  I felt a little crazy in the middle of this painting but I like how it turned out in the end.  The pinks in the painting are warmer than they appear in the photo.  It was hard to get it to match!

#203 Lemons and Blue Bowl

SOLD (6x6 in.)

This was the second painting from Monday night.  I don't usually paint more than one in an evening but I was on a roll and didn't want to stop!  I painted the bowl at a place in OKC called The House of Clay.  It's a pottery painting place.  I also painted a ceramic vase that I want to use as still life prop soon.  I'm hoping to go back and paint more pieces to use in my paintings.

#202 Little Yellow

SOLD (6x6 in)

I painted this lemon on Monday evening.  I was tired and almost didn't paint but I'm so glad I did.  It was one of those rare times when I didn't over think things and cared less about the result than the process.  I experimented with thicker paint and I really like how it turned out.   I think I get stingy with paint at times and also lack confidence when mixing up a pile of paint.  This time I tried to let those things go!  I painted a second painting afterwards that I also really like.  I'll post that one tomorrow!

#198 April Book Club

Click to buy! (6x6 in.)

I'll admit I really like this one.  When I set the still life up in my box I wasn't too sure how it would go.  I like the color of the apple, I like the gold in the background and I like the pink of the eraser.  Maybe the book is a little crooked?  I haven't loved my last few paintings so it was nice to do one that I'm more pleased with.

For April we read "The Ocean at the End of the Lane" by Neil Gaiman.  Very interesting!  We will talk about it this Sunday and looking forward to it.
