#171 February Book Club

SOLD (6x6 in.)

I painted this piece for February's book club and also for this week's Daily Paintworks Challenge.  The challenge this week is to paint things that are stacked.  I'm proud that the drawing stayed pretty accurate for this one, but wish that it was looser and my colors were less muddy.  Painting white ceramic is always such a challenge!  I may actually set this up a second time and try painting it again.  Or I might just try stacking some different things and paint those instead!

For book club, we read "The Rosie Project" by Graeme Simsion.  I loved this book.  I wanted something lighter after reading John Irving in January and this book delivered.  It was funny, a little mysterious and yet there was still depth.  There is a sequel to the book and I'm hoping to read it soon.  Here is the summary of the book I found online...

Meet Don Tillman, a brilliant yet socially challenged professor of genetics, who’s decided it’s time he found a wife. And so, in the orderly, evidence-based manner with which Don approaches all things, he designs the Wife Project to find his perfect partner: a sixteen-page, scientifically valid survey to filter out the drinkers, the smokers, the late arrivers.

Rosie Jarman is all these things. She also is strangely beguiling, fiery, and intelligent. And while Don quickly disqualifies her as a candidate for the Wife Project, as a DNA expert Don is particularly suited to help Rosie on her own quest: identifying her biological father.

When an unlikely relationship develops as they collaborate on the Father Project, Don is forced to confront the spontaneous whirlwind that is Rosie—and the realization that, despite your best scientific efforts, you don’t find love, it finds you.

Arrestingly endearing and entirely unconventional, Graeme Simsion’s distinctive debut will resonate with anyone who has ever tenaciously gone after life or love in the face of great challenges. The Rosie Project is a rare find: a book that restores our optimism in the power of human connection. #170 Backyard Hydrangea

Click to buy! (8x10 in.)

I painted this on Friday night.  It actually went pretty quickly, which surprised me.  I love Anne Ward's paintings and this was inspired by her.  She has many backlit bouquets painted in her yard.  I think this will be my last experiment with hydrangeas for awhile!  I had to sort of make up the background.  It was my house in the background, which is brick so that gave me the direction for how I painted it.

#169 Sierra Pathway

Click to buy! (6x6 in.)

Quite the departure for me!  I painted this piece for this week's DPW Challenge. I haven't painted many landscapes at all...though I would love to experiment with them more. I normally like to paint something in one sitting, but I had to come back to this one the next day and make some adjustments.

I welcome any gracious feedback to help me grow as an artist!

#167 Hydrangea Study

6x6 inch

I really enjoyed painting this and there are parts I like but I wish I had done the composition differently.  The hydrangea is too big compared to the vase, don't you think?  But I like the contrast between the light and shadow on it.

#165 & #166 Split Apple

Click to buy! (5x7 inch oil on gessobord)

I attempted to paint this apple twice yesterday.  I didn't really like the first attempt (below) so I tried again.  I like how this one turned out.  I've painted apples slices a couple of times, but it was still hard to figure out the values shifts.  I'm not sure that I got it quite right, but it was a good learning experience.

#164 Heart Candy

SOLD (6x6 in.)

I painted these candies on Friday night.  I was thinking about what to paint all day and this idea came to me last minute.  It was a challenge to figure out how to mix all of the reds, pinks, yellows, and oranges.

#163 Jeweled Tulip

I felt kind of out of control while painting the petals, which is where I started this painting.  My husband got home from work when I was about 2/3 of the way finished and I told him I didn't like it at all!  I thought it was definitely going to get wiped.  After getting everything blocked in, I went back into the flower and made some adjustments.  It definitely helped.  I would prefer to put down a stroke and leave it alone, but in this case it was better to fix it.  I feel like I'm still trying to get back into the groove of painting after the 30 day challenge and being out of town for a week.

#162 Tulip Bouquet

SOLD (7x5 in.)

I actually started painting this on Tuesday night when I was super tired and decided I needed to take a break.  Didn't have time to work on it again until earlier today.  Still not sure what I think of it and I think the photo is a little blurry.  I worked hard to get the values in the tulips accurate.

#161 Sunny Tulips

Click to buy! (6x6 in.)

I painted piece for this week's Daily Paintworks Challenge "The Chunked Challenge".  I tried to break it down into simple color and value areas.  I don't usually paint such bright, bold yellow but I think I needed it because it was very gray and rainy outside.  These tulips were from my husband for Valentines Day.  Hoping to paint a couple of more pieces with them.

#160 Black and White Pig

Click to buy!  (6x6 in.)

Not the most creative title!  Zach and I returned from our trip yesterday.  I was so sad to leave the sun, green and palm trees of Florida!  Today is gray and somewhat cold...though it could be a lot worse.  After catching an 8am flight to Dallas, driving the rest of the way to our home in OK, re-entry with our 4 year old and the grocery store, I attempted to paint last night.  It was for the DPW Challenge last week "The Black and White Challenge".  This painting is missing that extra something  but it was good to get out my paints again.  Also, I used some black construction paper and it didn't read black in the light!  It was more purple/blue.

#159 Polish

SOLD (6x6 in.)

My last painting for at least a week!  Zach and I are headed to Florida and Disney tomorrow.  I had the opportunity to go to Disney a number of times growing up, but Zach has never been!  He has never been to Florida either.  Praying for a great time to connect and have a lot of fun.  And that Nana will survive the week with our 4 year old!  This painting was tricky for me, but i like it.  Overall captured the vision I had when I set up the still life.  I want to try painting more of this subject.  I love the color and the light and shadow it creates.

#157 and #158 Commissions

12x12 inch oil on gessobord

"Buttercup" 8x8 inch oil on gessobord.

These are a couple of commissions I painted the last couple of days. The nativity was painted for a very special family that lives locally.  The dog was painted for someone that I met at the Indie Trunk Show!  I was so honored that she thought of me and contacted me to paint her sweet dog.  It was fun painting a little larger as well.

30 in 30 Challenge Complete!

I am so glad I did the 30 in 30 Challenge again!  Not only did I have a lot of fun painting (most...ha!) of these paintings, but I grew in some skills and met some fun people along the way.  Thank you to everyone who stopped by to check out my art.  Your encouragement meant a lot!

One thing I learned more about was making better compositions in my paintings.  I received some feedback (that I sought out) and the artist suggested that I work on that area.  I really appreciated the help!  I still have a lot to learn about it, but I am being more thoughtful about it now.  I also learned that I do better when I make a careful drawing in the beginning.  Sometimes I get to impatient and ignore a poor drawing.  That always leads to frustration.

Since the 30 day challenge, I have painted a couple of commissions.  I'll post those tomorrow.  What's next?  Well my husband and I are actually going on a vacation to Florida!  So I won't be painting for the next week or so.  I'm sure it will take me a few days to get back into the swing of things once I return.  I think I might explore some more florals next...or maybe I'll get some new inspiration during our travels!
