#222 Circles and Colors

Click to buy! (10x10 in.)

I was drawn to the colors in this set up and all of the circles.  Composition is really hard for me.  Is it for you?  When I first started painting, I sort of took it for granted.  Over time I've realized how important it is.  I still have a lot to learn about it.

#221 Pink and Green Berries

Donated (6x6 in.)

I didn't paint for almost a week because I was out of town visiting family in Texas!  On Tuesday I attempted painting a purple/pink rose for the DPW Challenge, but it wasn't quite right.  So I wiped it off on Wednesday afternoon.  Last night, I tried to do something more simple and it was good for getting back into the swing of things.  Still trying to decide what I'm going to paint tonight.  I have a couple of apples and an orange.  Or I might try the rose again!

#220 Fuzzy Friends 2

Click to buy! (6x6 inch on oil)

Painted these peaches last week, but I'm just now posting!  I was in Texas for the last several days visiting family and celebrating my daughter's 5 year birthday.   I really enjoyed painting peaches.  I'm pleased with how the background turned out.   A lot of times I like the painting until I do the background.  I keep thinking that should be the easiest part but it often trips me up.

#219 Fuzzy Friends

Click to buy! (6x6 inch oil)

Painting peaches was challenging because they are fuzzy!  I wasn't able to rely on a highlight to give it that pop, either.  To make them fuzzy, I added some strokes that were primarily white with some yellow, red and blue mixed in.  I put them in the places where I could see the fuzz on the fruit.  I think it went pretty well for a first attempt.  I was happy to use my striped fabric.  I'm hoping to find some more patterned fabric to use in future still lives.

#218 Pops of Sun

Click to buy! (16x12 inches)

I really enjoyed painting this piece.  I bought the vase last Friday and I was very excited to paint it.  Isn't it pretty?  I thought it looked great with the sunflowers I purchased at Sprouts yesterday.  I set this still life up around 8pm last night and felt like it needed to be bigger than my 6x6 or 7x5 inch panels.  I found a canvas I purchased last summer and decided to give it a shot.  I haven't painted on canvas in almost a year. It was different than the gessobords I've been painting on but I enjoyed it more than I did in the past.  Ever since the workshop I attended in May, I've been experimenting.  I've felt kind of lost because of it...still do, but I think that experimenting is so important and I trust that it will lead to good places in the future.  For this painting I experimented by using canvas.  I also blocked in the whole painting by thinning down my paints a little with mineral spirits before going back in to add the details.  For the details, I used a little medium in my paint.  I painted the light and more saturated parts of each object first and then the parts in the shadow.  I noticed with the canvas, it was harder for me to make distinct brush marks.  I probably need to apply thicker paint to make that happen?  I still have 2 other "large" canvases from last year that I want to give a try.

#217 Cherry Bowl

SOLD (6x6 in.)

I painted this about a month ago and somehow forgot to post it!  Have I mentioned I love painting cherries?  This was an exercise in painting glass, an ellipse and and white...which sometimes throws me off!

#216 Swim Lessons

Not for Sale (6x6 inches)

My daughter has been taking swimming lessons this week and I'm so proud of her!  She started the week not wanting to put her face in the water and ended the week doing so well.  She loved it.  I took this picture of her and her teacher on Wednesday and painted it that evening.  It was a total experiment.  Not only was it figurative, but I had to paint people underwater...but I think it turned out pretty well...all things considered!

#215 Avocado and Tomatoes

SOLD (6x6 inches)

After several days of not painting it was so nice to paint something and like how it turned out.  When I feel stuck or frustrated with what I've been painting, I'll often try painting a fruit or vegetable.  Not because they are easy for me, but they are easier!  I tried painting more thinly by adding some mineral spirits to my paint, but just a little.  Then I tried going back in some places with thicker paint mixed with medium for the details.  I kept the edges softer than in the past.

#214 Second Chances

Click to buy! (7x5 inches)

I painted these flowers pretty quickly last week.  I tried to just have fun and not overthink it too much.  My husband said the white flowers look more like lights than flowers, but I kind of like how they turned out!  I'm always trying to paint this dark blue background in my still lives...sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't!  I like how that part turned out this time.  After I painted it I realized the shape of the one flower on the right is a little awkward.  Oh well!

#213 The Barn Challenge

Click to buy! (5x7 inches)

Painted for this week's DPW Challenge.  I know there is a lot to improve on this painting.  I won't mention all the things driving me crazy about it.  But it was good to paint something yesterday and I'm glad I gave it a shot.  One thing I do like is how the trim turned out around/on the windows and doors.  When I painted them, I just painted it in quickly and thought I would go back and fix them.  But I like how that part wasn't overdone.

#212 Pink and Orange

SOLD (6x6 inch oil)

I named this painting "Pink and Orange" because those were my inspirations.  The bowl is actually my 4 year old's and has a picture of Cinderella on it, but I left that part out!  Ha!  I never thought I would enjoy painting the color pink as much as I do.  Maybe it is the time of year?  It was good to work on just a basic 6x6 still life after trying some new things recently.

#211 White Rose

SOLD (14x11 in.)

I used an artificial flower in this painting and it worked great.  It was my first time painting a white rose.  I painted all of it one evening and then fixed a couple of places the next day.  I tried blocking in the painting, again, this time.  I also worked from dark to light for most of it.  I also went for a softer look.  I'm still exploring so much about art and who I will be as an artist.  I think it is good to try new things and new ways of doing things.  I do think that every painting is helpful...even if it doesn't turn out well because I still learn things.  I will be selling this painting at the Indie Trunk Show this weekend.  If it doesn't sell, I will have it listed online!

#210 Homeward Bound

SOLD 10x10 inch oil

I took the reference photo for this painting while I was driving home from the art workshop in Alabama.  I think this was Arkansas.  I had a great trip home.  It was long, but the weather was beautiful and I listened to an audiobook, which helped pass the time!  Ever since painting clouds for the Daily Paintworks Challenge a few weeks ago, I've been wanting to paint more.  I'm going to try to sell this piece framed at the Indie Trunk Show next weekend.  If it doesn't sell there, I will list it online!
